The mixture of sea, mountains, art and culture, make Reggio Calabria the perfect place for any kind of activities in a continual succession of symbols and traditions still alive in folklore and religion.
Among the most beautiful places, at a short distance from the city, you should visit:
SCILLA: just 25 minutes by car (about 30 kms) the very beautiful Scilla is considered the pearl of the Tyrrhenian coast, with the Ruffo Castle, the Marina Grande and the "Chianalea", the characteristic fishing village whose houses lie alongside the sea.
BAGNARA: 45 kms far from the city, Bagnara is a beautiful and picturesque town, rich in culture and tradition. It stands by the sea and has a small port. Its important monuments, like the Ducal Castle, Ruggero Tower, Garibaldi Fountain and the Church of Carmine, are worth a visit.
GAMBARIE: less than an hour away you can get to Gambarie, a mountain resort situated in the middle of Aspromonte National Park. Renowned as a ski resort in winter, the place let you test the snow while watching the sea of the Strait. Charming and fascinating in summer, it is well known for wood walks and typical products.
GERACE: an hour and a half drive from Reggio ,Gerace is an impressive medieval village with a XII century Norman Cathedral where you can admire a greek-Byzantine crypt of great value with the Madonna of Itria Chapel and San Giuseppe Chapel. In the town centre, besides the Castle, you can admire the so called Square of the three Churches: S.Francesco’s, S.Maria’s and S.Giovannello’s church are all located in the square.
LOCRI: an hour drive, in the heart of Magna Grecia, you can visit the archaeological site of an ancient and important Greek colony: "Locri Epifizeri" whose findings, among which the “Dioscuri” and many "pinakes", are now on display at the Museum of Reggio Calabria. Notable of interest are also the remains of the ancient theatre standing nearby which dates back to the sixth century BC.
STILO: 150 kms away from Reggio, Stilo is considered to be one of the most important places in Calabria for its evidence of Byzantine style in town. There many hermits and monks lived and built the famous “Cattolica” Church, one of the most important and well preserved monuments in the region . Stilo is also the home town of the philosopher Tommaso Campanella
